WARNING This book contains action. Lots of action. Dinosaur-fighting action. Jurassic Park meets Transformers.

Raptors wage war with their dinosaur foes across the galaxy, and they've set their sights on Earth. If they can't take the planet for themselves, they plan on destroying it like they did 65 million years ago.

Human-friendly dinosaurs team up with the United States military, forming the Dino Squad. Their goal? Repel the raptors, save the planet.

Or die trying...

Raptor Threat Dino Squad Book 1 eBook Tom Wright

It’s fantastic that folks are realizing that the existence of electronic publishing–not necessarily in conjunction with a big publisher–allows writers to strike out in new directions. Each weird thing they come up with has a chance of hitting a previously-unrecognized niche. My hat’s off to people like Tom Wright, who are diving in to take advantage of this opportunity. This short piece of fiction consists mainly of the dinos and their allies going toe-to-toe with the raptors and their people. The action scenes are tightly wound, and non-violent scenes offer brief glimpses into how this all works.

I definitely had some problems with the willing suspension of disbelief. I wanted to buy into the whole thing, but I couldn’t let go of some of the holes. Given the fact that most dinos wouldn’t be able to manipulate fine machinery, how did they build spaceships? How did they arrive already fitted with electronic enhancements? Why would the government agree to the immense amount of money, time, and collateral damage required to send in a team of dinos with weapons blazing, when they could just drop a carefully-targeted bomb or SWAT team? The dinos don’t exactly fit in any building they go into, so they are less effective, and more globally damaging, than much of our own weaponry. At the very least I’d think they’d be reserved for outdoor fighting.

Yes, it’s funny that I can buy into the idea of dinos coming to earth to save us from raptors, but I can’t buy into many of the details. For readers who need to have careful, reasoned plotting, read something else. For the folks who just want the joy of seeing dinos and humans beat each other up, absolutely read this. The action scenes are well-detailed and a lot of fun!

Raptor Threat Dino Squad Book 1 eBook Tom Wright Reviews

This was action packed and lots of fun. Made this a quick read, and very enjoyable. Looking for action and science fiction, stop right here.
Can't wait for the next one. A new take on dino-human interaction.
This was cool, the dinosaurs come to earth from space and have advanced technology and the Raptors are the enemy. I like how the humans and Dinos are allies and can communicate with each other. It is a quick read and gets right into it. Had fun with this one, kudos to you Tom Wright.
This is a very action packed read, and said action is very well written and described. I loved the details of the dinosaurs' technology- such as Spike's x-ray vision visor, the raptor's arm mounted guns, and the translating devices attached to their necks. After a while, though, all of the fighting became a bit boring and predictable. In particular, I felt that the scene with Spike in the apartment building on the rescue mission went on far too long.

I agree with the other reviewer who wanted more details. Why would the military let the dinosaurs into the buildings when all they do is leave them in ruins as they fight? It doesn't seem very logical. I, too, was left wondering how the dinosaurs were able to get into and out of their armor back on their own world when they don't have opposable digits, long arms, or are even quadrupeds! (I'm guessing perhaps they have a machines that help them suit up...) It would be also very interesting to read how they'd be able to build such technology in the first place.

Still, there were details that really stood out to me. I felt that the way humanity reacted to seeing both the raptors and the other dinosaurs' ships was quite realistic. As was the rise of a certain fanatical cult in the wake of having their beliefs challenged. I also appreciate the fact that the main human character, Stacy, is African American. It's generally a good thing, in my opinion, when authors include characters that aren't just white- but said authors must always be careful to make their portrayals fair, believable, and accurate. I didn't see anything about Stacy's character that came across as a stereotype, so that was a very good thing!

The author does do a few things that throw scientific accuracy out the window- Pteranodon has teeth, Stegosaurus can move its back plates, and the "Velociraptors" make fun of how the humans believed they were feathered. I guess all of that's okay, since they're aliens anyway, but I think I'd appreciate the book a lot more if the author paid more attention to scientific accuracy, being a paleontology nerd. (Besides, how would these aliens explain away the feathered dinosaur fossils, I wonder, that are supposedly of their own "race" as they tried to colonize our world? Hmmm. )
