Dispensing with many coventions of the genre, Happy Hour instead is structured as a series of ruminations about the inevitability of violence--both physical and economic--in America and the futility of seeking justice therein. In the end the killer is never brought to justice which is not to say he gets away with anything. There is no sense of closure gained from his downfall. It's a dark book about a dark time.
